When God Breaks In |
|
| Advent is a time of anticipation and waiting for God's act of breaking into
world history with his redemptive work.
The general theme of our morning
preaching series for the month of December is that God breaks in, often at
times and in ways that are unexpected.
God's great breaking in climaxes
in the incarnation of the Jesus Christ as the Messiah; God's future breaking in will include the return of Christ at the end of time. In between
those two, God will break into our experiences regularly if only our eyes
and ears are tuned to him.
Pastor Paul has prepared an advent devotional titled, When God Breaks In. Use the "Advent Devotional" button immediately below to access these materials.

|
|
December 3: He Reveals Himself, Exodus 3:1-15
This service examines Moses' experience of God “breaking in” to him
at the burning bush and preparing him for the next big steps God was
about to take.
December 10: We Hear Him, 1 Samuel 3:1-10
As we continue in the season of Advent, we continue to think about
what happens when God breaks into our experience. God “broke in”
to call Samuel to a life of service. Samuel's response—readiness and
willingness for committed Christian service—must be a lesson to us.
December 17: He Accomplishes Great Things, Luke 1:26-38
We turn today to a New Testament passage in which the Holy Spirit
meets Mary and explains what is about to happen. Both the angel
and Mary share the conviction and confidence that God is about to
accomplish “great things.”
December 24: We See Him, John 1:1-14
God breaks into world history most dramatically in the incarnation. In
Christmas we see the incarnation of God and our lives are changed!
December 25: He Is Here, Luke 2:1-20
The time of fulfillment is here! We begin to celebrate the birth of Christ.
Joy and singing must fill the air.
December 31: Conflict Breaks Out, Matthew 2:13-18; Revelation 12:1-9
The arrival of Christ incarnate into this world brought salvation and
hope, but it also brought conflict as the forces of evil intensified their
efforts to overcome the work of Christ. Today the focus will be on
the massacre of the infants in Bethlehem in Matthew 2 and the
commentary on such events provided in Revelation 12. This service brings a strong touch of realism into the celebration of
Christmas. Spiritual warfare goes along with Christmas. Evil is
determined to destroy the work of Christ.

"Are You Ready?"
A Christmas Mini-Musical
If a man and pregnant woman knocked on your door asking if you
had any room for them to spend the night, would you let them in?
The story of Mary and Joseph is familiar to each of us, yet I’m
guessing, rarely do we wonder how we might have reacted if
approached by them today.
Together Kingdom Kids and Children in
Worship will explore how much room we give Jesus in our own lives--whether we respond with indifference, selfishness, procrastination,
pride, or with great love—as they prepare for the Christmas program.
Join us on Sunday Evening, December 3rd at 6:00pm for our annual Children's Christmas Program and help the children answer the question "Are You Ready?"

LIVING NATIVITY—38 DAY COUNTDOWN!
It was early the morning of Oct 12. Snow was falling and sticking! I looked out the window and it occurred to me that we have held the Living Nativity in all weathers! Where has the year gone? One of the songs in the nativity says, "bring your peace into our violence, bid our hungry souls be filled. . . tears are falling, hearts are breaking, how we need to hear from God. . . " How true this is!! For eleven years Brookside has reenacted this incredible miracle of peace and salvation. It takes 200-300 volunteers over three nights to make it happen! Will you be one of those volunteers?
Are there any teenage boys willing to fill the role of Joseph? Joseph was a teenage boy when he became the earthly father to Jesus. You can use this opportunity to be a missionary in your community.
The Neighbors in Nazareth will be back! It was an awesome addition last year. If you served at one of the booths consider being a "supervisor" of a booth for one night!
New members: This is a fabulous event to volunteer for with "no experience
necessary.” You will meet and mingle with Brooksiders of all ages!
Sign ups begin in a couple of weeks for this event December 8-10. Won't you
join us in introducing Jesus to our community? See you there!

Finding Our Place in
the Biblical Story
6 pm, Friday – 4 pm, Saturday
September 22-23, 2006
Location: Brookside CRC
"A conference for pastors, seminarians, church workers, elders, deacons, educators, parents and all disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who desire to live lives shaped by the Biblical story."
Further details listed here.

Finding Our Place in the Covenants
Throughout the remainder of
September in both our morning and evening services, we will ask ourselves
where we fit into the biblical stories of the Covenant. The covenantal
promises that God makes throughout the Old Testament are epitomized by
Jesus Christ in the New Testament and must be inhabited by all believers
today.
September 10: In the morning, Pastor Paul DeVries will help us find “Our Place in Creation,” using Genesis 1:26-31 as the text. In the
evening, he will use Genesis 8:15-9:17 to remind us of “Our Place
in Noah.”
September 17: In the morning Pastor Brian Ochsner will renew our
understanding that we are Abraham’s children and must find “Our
Place in Abraham.” His text will be Genesis 12. In the evening
Pastor Paul DeVries will continue our look at the covenants of God by
considering “Our Place with the Israelites.” God’s law given
through Moses in Exodus 20:1-24 forms the basis for the sermon.
September 24:This morning Pastor Paul DeVries will remind us of the
“new covenant” of Jeremiah 31:27-34. Do we know “Our Place in
God’s New People?” In the evening Pastor Brian Ochsner will use Ezekiel’s
image of a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:22-32) to help us find “Our
Place in God’s Grace.”
This preaching series on the covenants provides an excellent foundation to
our upcoming weekend conference, Finding Our Place in the Biblical
Story. The conference (September 22-23) will call us to shape our lives by
the Biblical story and its worldview. Top Back

God Acts Through Prayer
On June 25, Pastor Paul kicked off a five part series: God Acts Through Prayer. This series will use the book of Acts to take a look at some of the key ways in which the church and individuals grow and develop through the use of prayer. Although prayer is essential to every part of the life of the church, it is often neglected or relegated to a perfunctory status in the practice of the Christian church and individual members. The book of Acts shows how the early church depended on prayer.
June 25: “Shaken Through Prayer”
Acts 4:23-31
July 2: “Directed Through Prayer”
Acts 10:9-34
July 16: “Put in our Right Mind Through Prayer”
Acts 12:5-16
July 23: “Ministry and Mission Through Prayer”
Acts 16:25-34
August 6: “Sent Out Through Prayer”
Acts 20:36-21:6 |

The Drama of Scripture
Imagine trying to teach the history of the American presidency by
beginning with the Teddy Roosevelt administration, jumping to the Reagan
administration, going back to the Jefferson administration, and then talking
about Watergate during the Nixon administration. Your students might be
confused regarding the historic flow and development of the American presidency,
don’t you think?
Yet, this is exactly how many of us approach the Bible.
One of the difficulties that we have in “hearing” the truth of scripture today
is that we have lost the sense of the redemptive historical approach to
scriptural study.
The Bible is a historic
narrative telling of the
unfolding redemptive plan of
God. It moves from beginning
to end to tell us the true story
of how a good world gone bad
is redeemed through the
triumphant death and
resurrection of Christ. By
taking a panoramic look at the
Bible, reading it as a whole,
the various pieces begin to
make more sense.
Beginning on May 14, Pastor Paul DeVries will lead us in a look at the Bible as a
book. Using a familiar and well developed model for understanding and writing
narrative or dramatic works, Pastor Paul presents the truth of
Scripture in a dramatic fashion.

They are installing ceiling tiles, carpet, cabinets, and restroom fixtures. The fireplace is in. Chester, Todd, and Paul are still painting! Harold and Chuck, the electricians, will complete the light installation when the ceiling tiles are in. Karl is finishing the fire sprinkling system. Thanks to the great construction crew (Jimmy, Andy, Tim and others) who have put a lot of their own TLC into this project. We anticipate an early March completion!
